Khamla Somphanh

Khamla Somphanh is a distinguished teaching artist and choreographer, making significant contributions to the dance world through her dynamic and creative work. Graduating from Duke Ellington Performing Arts High School in Washington, D.C., she went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s College of California, furthering her expertise with a Horton Pedagogy Certification from The Alvin Ailey School in New York City.

Khamla's career as a performer is marked by her engagements with several prominent dance companies. Her credits include performances with ODC/San Francisco Dance Company, Wyliiams/Henry Dance Ensemble, Na-Ni Chen Dance Company, East/West Repertory Ensemble, New World Dance Company, Soundance Dance Company, and Malashock Dance Company. Notably, she also showcased her talent in the Broadway production of “The King and I” and its first national touring company as a lead dancer and Assistant Dance Captain.

In addition to her accomplishments as a performer, Khamla has earned recognition for her choreographic works. Her creations have been featured in productions by various esteemed dance organizations, including LITVAKdance, San Diego Dance Theater, Malashock Dance, The PGK Project, Visionary Dance Theater, Diversionary Theater, Canyon Crest Academy, Malashock Dance Company, School of Creative and Performing Arts, and Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company. These works highlight her versatility and ability to captivate audiences through movement and storytelling.

As an educator, Khamla Somphanh is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of dancers. She serves as a Lecturer at San Diego State University School of Music and Dance and is on the faculty at Lynch Dance Institute, Visionary Dance Theater, and The Kennedy Center Dance Lab. She is also known for holding open community movement classes throughout San Diego, demonstrating her dedication to making dance accessible and enriching for a broad community.

Khamla Somphanh's passion for dance is evident in both her performance and teaching. She aims to inspire and enhance the education of aspiring dancers through positive mentoring and informative direction. Her work in various colleges, universities, high schools, and dance institutions across the country showcases her commitment to the growth and development of dance as an art form.
